It’s time for Beginnings, the podcast where writer and performer Andy Beckerman talks to the comedians, writers, filmmakers and musicians he admires about their earliest creative experiences and the numerous ways in which a creative life can unfold.
On today’s show, I talk to writer and casting director Katja Blichfeld. Originally from California, Katja moved to New York to pursue a career in casting and worked on all seven seasons of 30 Rock, garnering an Emmy for her work. She’s also cast a number of other shows, including The Carrie Diaries and the Battlestar Galactica prequel Caprica. Outside of casting, Katja is also the co-creator of the highly-acclaimed webseries High Maintenance. Created with her husband Ben Sinclair, the show is now in development at a major cable network.
Back in January, Katja came over to my Harlem studio to talk about arguing with your parents, the thesaurus, evangelical Christianity, losing yourself, being sensitive, emigrating from Denmark, the merchant marines, and complexity theory. And in the second half of the show, I talk to my friend Juliet W., a producer on The Daily Show, about being present and how she learned to be present while volunteering on a Lakota reservation over the summer.
